Bitchboards - How to Tell A Snowboard Company Is Bad

When I recently found out that Bitchboards had survived the season, and not only that but had added a new line of bindings to its products, I couldn't believe it. So many good companies were lost to the recent economics time, yet this piece of shit brand somehow survives and expands? Either Bitchboards survives via deep pockets (more on that later), or it is we who are to blame...

Understand that in writing this article, I am faced with a monumental challenge: Here I am, a guy snowboarder, about to try and talk any lady snowboarders who read this page out of selling themselves short. So I am 1. A guy, 2. I have never tested, or even seen, these girls snowboards, and 3. I'm going against a company that has built its brand on gender identity (some powerful psychological stuff) with a deviously sneaky, yet incredibly effective marketing plan behind it.

So this is what I am up against before I even get the ball rolling; the odds are pretty much completely against me. The way I see it is this: What follows is not necessarily an attack on Bitchboards alone so much as an attack on all companies that come into this market only for the glory and the profitability. This is what a bad snowboard company looks like...

A successful snowboarding company is usually built around a unique idea or innovation that satisfies a particular void in our industry. Bitchboards actually does have a niche, the "snowboards by girls for girls" market, which while slowly growing is still in dire need of revolutionary companies; Bitchboards just isn't one of said companies:
"BitchBoards® is a new and revolutionary company focusing exclusively on the creation of highly functional and fashionable ‘boards for bitches’. We’re not talking about awkward and heavy men’s boards with butterflies and daisies slapped on top. We are also not talking about ‘chick-sized’ boards with a dash of pink across the surface, hiding weak and cheap manufacturing..."
So let's check fact with fiction. Women's voices in the snow industry are definitely being heard, and today you can't be a snowboard manufacturer without offering a ladies or at least a unisex model. More and more female riders are starting to push the progression of the sport, and this has meant enormous improvements each year to the women's hardgoods market. Burton, Salomon, K2 and many, many other companies all offer a full line of tried, tested and approved snowboard models specifically designed for the female rider.

To call the female models in production today, "...awkward and heavy men's boards with butterflies and daisies slapped on top," is pretty bold, particularly when the company making the claim offers no detailed explanation on just what makes their boards for girls. Essentially this is just a claim from a stranger that you can either believe or not, and I don't buy it.

Now, I have scoured the Bitchboards website time and time again looking for evidence that maybe, just maybe they do care about the progression of snowboarding. They finally added a Twin-tip model, yet even that lacks any real substance. They did add a hint of technical research with "Engineered Carbon Fiber for Woman's Lower Center Of Gravity". I'm not a wizard with these things, but I do believe carbon fiber is used more for stiffness and pop; I'm not sure what a woman's center of gravity would have to do with the carbon fiber.

Basically, these boards are no different than the boards at your local Sportsmart/Sports Authority/Wal-Mart, and their new binding line is more of the same. It's very clear that Bitchboards is not about female progression in snowboarding, but they do have a target consumer:
"Our mission and philosophy is to always provide the highest quality women's snowboards women love to ride and show off! We promise to provide the ultimate in style and design in every BitchBoards® snowboard without skimping on the performance or quality...

...BitchBoards® is embracing the word 'Bitch' to mean an empowered and beautiful female snowboarder. It's a fun and playful ‘thumbing of the nose’ at a male-dominated industry that until now hasn't addressed women's real wants and needs. Move over 'betties' the 'bitches' are shredding up the mountain!"
Yes, in an effort to break away from the male-dominated industry and pre-conceived notions of a woman's taste, Bitchboards offers a snowboard that let's everyone on the mountain know that you are the stereotypical Long Beach Barbie, all about looks and in serious need of books. Bitchboards boast a "pretty" photo-realistic topsheet yet underneath reveals a bland, rudamentary and simplistic board construction; pretty on the outside with a soul like dried leather... just like Long Beach Barbie.

Even the name, "Bitchboards", is just another gimmick, another way the company feeds on our psychological impulses. Either you are raving on how bold and unconventional the genius behing Bitchboards, Alex Masterson, is; or you are absolutely hating on the absurdity of having the word "Bitch" plastered across the base of your board. Guess what? Alex Masterson actually is a genius, well not her, but her family and the folks over at Masterson Creative. Turns out daddy happens to specialize in "Branding, corporate identity and image building." A perfect arrangement if you are a spoiled little girl who wants to have her own snowboard company, and you have a shitty product that you need to sell tons of skeptical people.

I'm not necessarily saying I want Bitchboards to go away, but if it is going to stay and people are going to keep buying their boards--and now bindings--then they really need to step it up and figure out what the industry is all about. Right now, Alex Masterson and Bitchboards just don't get snowboarding... it's plain and simple.

The thing is, it is true that there is a lack of information and resources for female riders who want to get started/progress to the next level in their riding; seeing an girl-specific board company like Bitchboards, especially with how much they promise to deliver to female riders, makes it all to easy to fall victim. Don't sell yourself short! Consider your sources and do your research. You can ask around on forums, call various companies; don't forget to pump your local shop kids for information or you can even try and send an email to your favorite pro-snowboarder. Even if graphics and looks are your main concern, don't let clever brand marketing talk you into paying over $600 (the going price for Bitchboards last season) for a board you could have bought for under $200 at Sportsmart. Better yet, take that $600 and buy into some of the truly innovative and progressive woman's snowboard companies.

  4. Hey...where on the site does it say $600 for a board? Maybe you should do your research. They are going for $329.99. Why would you write this whole thing with the wrong facts? haha!

I've seen your posts in other places...you really have something against BitchBoards! What's the deal...do you have a crush on that Alex chick or what...hello kindergarten!!

  5. Wow...that's a lot of bitter criticism without much proof. You talk about their products being substandard but don't offer any specifics about engineering of their boards or ride critiques. If I am going to plunk down big bucks for any new "toy," I do my research first and try to find lots of reviews from sources who have done the testing. Where is yours, dude?

  6. Well it would be nice if these things were actually available to ride on the mountain demo days like all the other companies before making a decesion on the feel. But as a girl I don't really dig the name much at all and as a taller girl who does ride agressively I like many guys boards, um and have broken a couple of them too!!

  7. Jealous boys. I am a girl rider who has worked hard to get to were I am in the competitive world of snowboarding and the industry in general. And at no time along the way did i see anyone complain about a all women snowboard company thriving in this male targeted sport. It's kinda sad to see a sport that has grown so much in the little time it has been around is now being turned into some political pool of.. well.... shit.

  8. I am a woman in the snowboard industry who has created something and is deeply involved in the industry. I am in complete agreement with this article. I am not threated I just think this company has no soul. I am not a bitch and my friends are not bitches. Eat that.

  9. I love bitchboards!!!! Alex Masterson changed my life!!! I took her camp in February and she is actually one of the few people who really is trying to break down the snowboarding barriers (AND THERE ARE!!!! BARRIERS!!!!!) for women by providing good equipment and an opportunity to learn using that equipment! By the end of the first day I was linking turns!!! AMAZING!!!

I never thought I would be a snowboarder but now I can't get enough! Why do you guys hate on a company that brings more people to snowboarding? Seems like you are contradicting yourself if you love snowboarding so much, but only want certain types of people to do it.... lame.

Not to mention you hypocrites who write the brand off because of it's base graphic- that's just as bad as buying the board for the graphic which you claim is not what REAL snowboarders do. Can't you see it's the same thing!! Hahahahahahaha! What idiots!

  13. I am a female snowboarder. My first season, coming into the sport I knew nothing. Bitchboards looked like a refreshing welcome into the sport. Which, honestly, is what women like me needed coming in. It is intimidating coming in and not knowing the language, not knowing what you are doing and more importantly not knowing what you need or what you are looking for.

With that said, once I started riding and doing my research, I learned quite a few things: Bitchboards ARE piece of crap boards. No better than my first no-name brand board that I purchased for my first run on the mountain. Aside from pretty pictures with matching bindings, there really is no real technology behind the board itself.

I want the same technology that they offer the guys and I have looked. Gnu? Roxy? Sure some come might offer me some, but not all, nothing close to what they offer the guys. I appreciate what Alex is trying to do for the chicks, but hey, go see lib-tech, go see Burton, Salomon, K2 and the companies that are doing the technology right. Take all those things and offer the chicks something real. I will pay 600 for a board that can give me all that tech and a pretty top sheet, not to mention a responsive binding.

Oh yeah, I don't like the "bitch" plastered all over the board either. I think the connotation is what we as REAL WOMEN are trying to break through in every day life. If someone called me that in the street I would pop them in the grill piece, no questions asked. You think I want people looking at me like that on the mountain? I don't need to label myself like a can of Cambell's soup to try to earn respect on the mountain. Your riding does that.

Lastly, WHERE are the women riders that have the experience to come out and educate the new riders as to what they need to look for? The only other women I see out there trying to do that are the Shred Betty chicks (I got great info from them and they keep it real). This company preys on the new riders. Because I know for a fact that I won't buy that Bitchboard crap now that I am ready to move up with my progression.

Maybe the women in the sport need to take a pro-active role in educating the female riders.

  14. Thank you shred betties for plugging your site. It's obvious you've never ridden a bitchboard. If you did and really hated it why didn't you return it? Cause it never happened. So transparent!

My bad... :-) Listen Alex, cuz, this has to be you...RIGHT? I mean you DID put it out to all your Facebook peeps to come here and smash up this honest blog? I didn't HAVE to return the board, because after a test drive, I refused to BUY it. Got it? Nice BITCH. Go buh-bye now.

  17. To the shred betty post and eveyone else.

Here is a REAL review of the BitchBoards snowboards:

I am a snowboard instructor, I spend every season in Vail, Colorado and have been riding for 15 years. I am 5'4 and 120 lbs and have always had a hard time finding a board that was light weight enough for my small frame and could also handle in the conditions of Colorado. I met Alex last year and she let me test out and critique her new boards. She had a bad manufacturer (in the US of all places!) the first year out and now had improved her construction and wanted a few pros to try it out.

I always love trying out new women's equipment so of course I said yes! I don't judge unless I try it.

And I LOVED IT!!! The BitchBoard is everything I could have ever wanted. Alex really took the features I wanted and put them into her boards for a very responsive and forgiving ride, but still super fun to pop around on. I've been in this industry a long time and I can tell you that the women's market has progressed and BitchBoards is on its way to perfecting it. When I'm teaching, I let the ladies try my board and they find it much easier to learn on which is what the industry needs.

This board is great for a beginner/intermediate woman. I think that is the demo they are going after. I would not recommend for very aggressive riders who pride themselves on breaking boards. The BitchBoard is not made for you 'hardcore' ladies.

BitchBoard is a great board ( I have the Mode), I get tons of attention on it and it suits my style.

Just to touch on technology- I worked for a very long time in manufacturing operations management after college and I can tell you that most of the boards (90%) are made out of the same factories in China with the same "technology" you speak of. The "technology" you reference is a bunch of marketing schemes thought up by corporations. That's marketing 101 there. Thats why they all perform the same and look the same because there really is no difference.

Props to Alex for listening to the female voice!

"This company preys on the new riders" translates into> "This board is great for a beginner/intermediate woman. I think that is the demo they are going after." WOW... Feel like pleading the fifth for fear of incriminating yourself?

"I would not recommend for very aggressive riders who pride themselves on breaking boards. The BitchBoard is not made for you 'hardcore' ladies."< What exactly IS a "Hardcore lady?" A rider that wants to progress? You can go to any of the other companies and get a starter board for a FRACTION of the the price. Why are you trying to rip off the newbies? Is the goal here to NOT get females to progress? Why buy a 600 dollar board and use it for a season or two, when after that you will be ready for a better board? Ripping people off early on does nothing for the sport.

"She had a bad manufacturer (in the US of all places!) the first year out.." < No REALLY? How many "new and improved" boards came out for this year? A twin tip? Oooohh, yeah progress there.

"The "technology" you reference is a bunch of marketing schemes thought up by corporations. That's marketing 101 there." < thats BULLSH*T 101 and I'm calling you on it.

Nuff said. I tire of these BitchBoard games. Gimme something better than "friends" coming out to defend Bitchboards because Alex is SOOO nice...of course she is, she wants your money.

Hey Alex: Next year I want a reverse camber with MTX tech, cuz I like to slice the ice (do you even know what that means?). Oh yeah, I want a pic of a huge penis on the top sheet. You know... for us "very aggressive riders who pride themselves on breaking boards." THEN maybe I might be proud to be called a Bitch.

  22. I was surprised to see 18 comments in my inbox... it would seem I struck a nerve. Some of you pose good points others are just plain mad at me. Ain't freedom of speech a "bitch", no pun intended.

@BitchBoards Luver: The boards are pre-ordering for $329.95, whether Alex Masterson has woken up or the price will jump back to $600 after September remains to be seen (As mentioned in the article, this was the going price last season)...

@ Anonymous #1: I never said the boards were "sub-standard", I said they aren't specially designed for a female rider in any way--I'm saying they are standard-- I'm sorry to report that there is nothing "new" or "female-specific" about a Poplar wood core, sandwich construction and steel edges; and using Carbon fiber is something companies have been doing for ages. The 4400/7500 bases are standard as well. There are your facts foo.

@ The Tradeshow Remark: Biggest tradeshow in who's eyes? She won an award for being a business startup with a unique idea, and I already stated that I think having a sick all-girls company is a great idea--but BitchBoards is not this company. As far as this award is concerned, I'm thinking a shoe-in award and the publicity to come with it was definitely worth a trip from California to...Germany?

@ All of Camp Comments: If you thought a BitchBoards camp was fun, come out and learn some real snowboarding at High Cascade this summer! Leanne Pelosi and her all-girls snowboard camp do a tour through there - http://www.mgtsnowboardcamp.com.

@ The Snowboard Instructor: So... you are saying that BitchBoards manufactures an awesome beginner/intermediate all-girls snowboard that would be a perfect demo board for girls? Well, there is certainly an open market for that... but coming from Vail you'll understand the impossibility of any rental company anywhere endorsing the word "Bitch" on their snowboards. Too bad, it sounds like they really help your students. P.S. Your comment about board constructions being gimmicks and all boards looking and performing the same is just so...damn...wrong.

I really want to meet this Alex Masterson. It seems like everyone who meets her is ready to swear their undying allegiance to her and everything she stands for. You know who else commanded that kind of charisma? Hitler.

  23. Looks like the fanbots and sheeples have found something to congregate on and attempt to attack the person posting this. Were you the same people last fall that were rallying against the Burton Love graphic as well? Wonder why none of you have ventured over to feast on the hate festival I dished out last year which touched on many of the same points and on numerous others? Fear of dealing with someone that knows far more than you?

First off I commend anyone that realizes how kookish Bitch Boards honestly is, I called it the first time I saw them. After talking with Alex I realized how oblivious to snowboarding she truly is and her website speaks volumes about it. It's a joke of the industry, much like Ed Hardy. Small companies can be innovative and bring something to the table and others can nip at the heels of those being innovative and suck people down.

So here's some comments I'll personally address.

"Sounds like you are very threatened because you can't create a snowboard brand yourself...just something to think about!"

Just because you came up with a logo and found a cheap OEM factory doesn't mean you have a snowboard brand either. Just something to think about!

  24. "Hey...where on the site does it say $600 for a board? Maybe you should do your research. They are going for $329.99. Why would you write this whole thing with the wrong facts? haha!"

I wish I had saved a screen shot from last fall when they were on sale for 600 dollars. FYI when someone is charging for a pre order and delivering in September they're generally hoping to make enough pre sales to make their minimum order and keep the company afloat. Typical of a company that doesn't have a solid business plan.

"Wow...that's a lot of bitter criticism without much proof. You talk about their products being substandard but don't offer any specifics about engineering of their boards or ride critiques. If I am going to plunk down big bucks for any new "toy," I do my research first and try to find lots of reviews from sources who have done the testing. Where is yours, dude?"

After attacking one of the Bitch Boards with a screw driver, yes thats right I jabbed a hole through the base and pried it up to see what it was about, I can tell you they're crap. If you took the board and looked at it after giving it a hot wax you could see the core profiling looked like it wasn't routed right and in turn had this weird /\/\/\/\/\ thing going on, the bases were incredibly thin, there were huge gaps in the sidewalls, topsheets had dimples in them all over, spaces between the base and the edge. Reminded me of the DC snowboards and the fact their QC is deplorable.

"Jealous boys. I am a girl rider who has worked hard to get to were I am in the competitive world of snowboarding and the industry in general. I'm honestly not jealous of a shitty company that uses weak marketing tactics to try and convince people to buy their products. What level of competition are you in and who are your sponsors since you felt the need to toss out that you're in competitions.?

"I love bitchboards!!!! Alex Masterson changed my life!!! I took her camp in February and she is actually one of the few people who really is trying to break down the snowboarding barriers (AND THERE ARE!!!! I spew forth hate on crappy ideas and crappy products. Something of which Bitch Boards has both of. It latches on to a weak marketing ploy to sucker people in. How many boards has Alex given away YTD to promote her brand as hard as she has? How much shifting of money from Masterson Creative has been pushed over to Bitch Boards to keep it afloat so daddies little girl could have her own business?

How much did you pay for that private camp including all other expenses? Be surprised how easy and cheaper it is to put together a full kit, trip, and lesson by yourself.

"Looks like the biggest tradeshow for sports in the world thinks BitchBoards has got it goin on!!! They honored BitchBoards with the style award for sports products. "

So what Mervin MFG also won the award for their innovative C2 Banana a year after Never Summer Released it. Those are just awards for ego stroking.

How many boards have you even owned and ridden? Saying it's the best board doesn't really mean shit. I don't know too many people that buy a board then are stuck riding it and admit it's a piece of crap, context here people.

As far as the graphics, I wouldn't carry it in any of the shops I worked in because it doesn't have appeal to families. Families which are the backbone of the snowboard industry when it comes to sales. Think I'm going to whip out a bitch board to show to a 12 year old girl and her 38 year old mother? Not going to happen. Also there's more hype on the "high quality" portraits or whatever she's touting them as then the actual tech. But that's another story.

"Lastly, WHERE are the women riders that have the experience to come out and educate the new riders as to what they need to look for? "

I actually have a post in the works but if you're looking for other ladies to consider checking out. They are out there and they're working to inform you ladies.

"HAHA Gotta love a BITCH that can't take a little constructive (destructive) criticism. Well done! A Facebook sik'em! Hilarious!!!!"

Damn why didn't they come over and attack my post last year?

To the Instructor from Vail, sounds like a bunch of horse shit. First off Vail resorts is super anal about image, if they won't let you ride with the Burton Love graphic, I highly doubt they will let you ride with a board that says BITCH on the base. So either you're not an instructor, or you're full of shit.

"After all the criticism and public beat down Alex has rose above to stand strong with an amazing product and an equaly amazing expantion line into hardwear.

This coming from the girl that's moving to Aspen to have a private coach teach her all next season. So how many other women's specific designed products have you ridden?

Also a couple of articles won't bring her down but sucking daddies bank account dry certainly will. Welcome to a horrible economy and an industry that is notorious for having companies come in and out of it.

So I'll toss it out here since Alex seems to be on a mission here to try and discredit Lou. Offer is on the table if you want to do a serious no holds barred interview, I don't sugar coat any questions I ask companies and I don't expect pussy footed answers.

I also love the abundance of people that hide behind Anonymous as well, could it all be from the same IP? Hmm I'm betting so.

  26. all i can say is that when a girl comes into the shop i work at, i ask her every question i would want someone to ask me if i were looking for a new deck and wasn't sure what i what to buy. on that note, there are a number portion of women that come in and say "i don't care about anything else, i just want something that looks good." when that happens, i sell her the most expensive pretty piece of shit in the store. if we carried bitchboards, i would sell her one of their decks for sure.

there is a small demographic for what they're selling (as hard as it is for me to say). it's disappointing from a female perspective.

  28. My favorite part is when snowboarding is said to be a male dominated sport. Which sport isn't considered male dominated? Trying to get women more involved in any sport is worthwhile and I have nothing against it... Although... having Bitch written on the board only says one thing to everyone: "Don't take me seriously because I have no self respect or dignity so call me a bitch instead of an athlete." My God, you're fucking retarded, show some class.

    ReplyDelete
  29. i don't think it was necessary to attack alex personally.
i agree with the rest of the article though.

i've been riding for about 13 years and i don't see myself as a bitch, i see myself as a rider. so i'm not too fond of the name. but that's my personal taste.

also, reducing women to only wanting to look good is the wrong way if you want to support them, in my opinion.

yeah, i'm into nice color combinations myself (and i guess a large number of snowboarders feels the same, not only women!), but to me it's much more important that my setup is GOOD. i'd rather have a buttugly board that's awesome to ride so i can have tons of fun on the mountain... thankfully many boards and bindings that are offered nowadays both are good AND look nice ;)

in general, i'm all for companies by women for women. but in this case i'm not really sure if this company is really helping women to be taken seriously as an athlete, to better their riding and to get into snowboarding more.
    i might be wrong...

  31. I wonder if Alex is considering rewriting the "About Bitchboards" section of her website - that's what seems to spur most of the criticism and negative attention I've seen.

Whether or not you like Alex or Bitchboards, there's no getting around the fact that the website blatantly misrepresents the majority of women's snowboarding gear available today.

I actually think Bitchboards does some good things for beginner riders - I've heard from several girls that the friendly welcoming atmosphere of the beginner camps helped them get into snowboarding (whereas they may have been intimidated to try something like Leanne Pelosi's camp). Plus, there's nothing wrong with gearing your product toward the beginner market - there's plenty of opportunity there.

But if that's what she's doing, the "about Bitchboards" crap doesn't make sense - unless Lou G. is right, and it's all intentional marketing trickery?

    ReplyDelete
  32. @ Steph: this is an excellent point and one I forgot to cover since I got so stuck on purely techn. I forgot to mention that while most other companies have boards that are lightyears ahead of Bitchboards, they also sport graphics that ironically are just what Alex Masterson claims she is revolutionizing: A graphic that says you are a girl rider, but with a little bit more sophistication than just a pink butterfly.

@ Kelly: But is Bitchboards targeting only beginner riders? Most reviewers agree the boards are built for a beginner rider, but you would have to be fully brain-dead to paste the word "BITCH" all over a company where your target market was little girls/young adults/families coming into the sport. So either the brand wants to be taken seriously as a progressive womens company, or they seriously underestimated just how many talented and educated female riders were out there.

  33. I'm trying to figure out what "barriers" Bitchboards crosses. The "I'm too hot for Roxy" barrier? The "Yuck, I don't want to ride what these Tahoe 10s are riding" barrier? This Alex chick has flooded the comment board, funny how all the comments supporting Bitchboards are left by anonymous users (except for the appropriately named "Whitney").

The true tell-tale sign that Bitchboards are nothing more than graphics and hype is the fact that they don't have a single team rider. Not one. What pro would ride for this kook company? And I give kudos to the author for finding out trust fund Alex's family background. Bitchboards are a total kookfest. "Daddy, I want to start a snowboard company for me and all my hot bimbo friends!" "OK sweetie, I'll get to work." Pathetic. Writeup coming on TheExtremeScene.com

  34. Cyrus and the Extreme Scene make me happy.

I think Whitney should be nominated for the Tahoe 10.

  35. Lou G. - I think they're aiming at young well-off women, not kids or families. Most of the Bitchboards promotional activities are camps and clinics geared towards first time riders, and they are quite expensive! So I don't think she's targeting the same market as price point snowboards at Sports Authority.

I think her market probably falls more in the label whore crowd... like Cyrus says, it's all about hype - the name, the style, the design... not really about making an innovative or superior product. And judging from the Chanel snowboard last season, perhaps people are thinking label whores are an untapped market?

  36. Try riding a bitch board and then comment.

  37. Anonymous - No matter what people might think if they rode a Bitchboard, the fact remains that the website makes completely false claims about what's available to women in the industry today.

  38. Send me another one and I'll ride it. I have no shame in riding women's boards.

  39. OK, i found ths post rather disturbing...Y would someone in their right mind openly publicly post crap about another person trying to make it in the world?? - First you say its not a hit on BitchBoards alone...yet it clearly is...but to publicly diss and bag on Alex as a person??? You have some issues up in there!! Who cares if she told her facebook FANS..YES DUDE "FANS" to check this post out....its ok for (whoever the hell you are..No Name) to publicly try to humiliate her to all your NO FANS..Alex is a women who knows what women want and she went for it "QUITE SUCCESSFULLY I MUST ADD" Its a new company and improving all the time!!! Big ups to Alex and BITCHBOARDS for doing wht u do..and if Daddy ws there to lend a helping hand - even better i say!!! Tht dude obviously doesnt own or operate his own company as Alex does - with or without daddys help - shes the one putting in all the hard yards Promoting, marketing, improving and running her FANTASTIC company...shes out there and thts wht women need. So much you can say to all the HATERS UP ON ERRR but why waste the energy on them...Keep on hating people - Someones gotta do it, and you will find they are the least successful people in life.

Sheesh cant believe it..Alex - im proud you have haters who will spend tht time hating on you lolz, cause while they doing tht - your selling BITCH BOARDS!!! To many contradicting people on here - Your in a Niche Market aite..xx

  40. Hell yeah, send one to Avran... seriously. Let's just end the debate once and for all.

Alex and her "bitches" all swear by Bitchboards, so if they really stand by their product that firmly then they shouldn't have any problem sending a board to someone who tests hundreds of snowboarding products each season and whose opinion is considered by some of the most innovative companies in the industry today.

In any case most of the "bitches" keep telling everyone to try their board first. Well, I'll try one but I'm not going to fucking buy one to do so... sorry.

P.S. Maybe I can get used to this "Bitchboards" brand... as long as I can keep calling the girls who ride them "bitches". After all, it's a word of empowerment, right Alex?

  41. and even if it is not the best product yet...THERE IS ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT..after all, that is what a great company does - learns from mistakes and makes them better next time. Hw else are you spouse make your product better? Then you can also go the other way an say give me a board to try..just to get a free board. If your a male - hw can you possibly comment on what is good about the board and wht is not??? unless your secretly wanting to be a female. You dont knw whts good for chicks! We hve totally different perspectives to males..Its sooo a fact. Get over it. Sounds like a personal problem cause she had the BALLS to focus on a women only product - and she Cracked it! something a male obviously over looked.

  42. and i dont mind being called a bitch at all...with or without a BITCHBOARD woman are always gonna be labelled bitches...maybe this is a new revolution shes starting - soon it'll be a household name and to be called a bitch, will be like .... YEAAAAAA jealous much??

Y u need a name? So you cn try to h8 on us personally? I also wrote the last 3 Anon comments. Soz Boz... u cn try to insult, but I also own/operate a company so knw how hard it is to make it in a male dominated industry...haters like you - just empower bitches like us even more. Some points are vaild - most are just darn right HATING..PEACE PEOPLE

  44. Why do you keep coming back? Pace yourself bitch, breathe.

So let's get dirty with it: "Y would someone in their right mind openly publicly post crap about another person trying to make it in the world??"

Your blatant inability to spell and retarded colloquialisms to make you sound gangster or valley-girl or whatever makes you most likely from the States (sadly).

This being true, you just sat through a two-year election process that was almost ENTIRELY two people publicly "posting" crap about one another. Is this really a new concept to you?

You could even argue that it's human nature, since I don't think there has ever been a period of time where someone wasn't working discredit another. Open up a history book sometime, you might be surprised.

Ironically, the only people who are doing any personal insulting on this thread are the bitches, or at least Kara, queen of the anonymous. My comments, and even the original article, have been kept almost strictly about the company and its purpose. Anyway, this is my website and I can do what fucks I want to do with it. Got it? In fact the only reason your comment(s) exists is because I agreed to publish it (them). How about them apples?

"Tht dude obviously doesnt own or operate his own company as Alex does - with or without daddys help - shes the one putting in all the hard yards Promoting, marketing, improving and running her FANTASTIC company...shes out there and thts wht women need."

You are the second tool to say something like this.

No, I don't own or operate my own company... I'm not even sure how this is a factor since there are quite a few million people--each equally entitled their opinions--in the same boat.

Owning a company yourself, do you listen only to the opinions of other company owners or the opinions of your consumers, the average Joes (that you are so kindly insulting with such ignorant remarks)?

"Alex is a women who knows what women want and she went for it "QUITE SUCCESSFULLY I MUST ADD"

In reading and learning from the comments I understand more the Bitchboards market. Alex is a womAn (singular) who knows what womEn (plural) like YOU want, but Alex doesn't have a fucking clue what a female SNOWBOARDER wants.

Her "success" is the direct result of a beastly marketing and image building campaign using her family's firm. Alex will never know what it is like to build your own boards in your garage with your bare hands, getting the name out there one board at a time.

  45. "and even if it is not the best product yet...THERE IS ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT..after all, that is what a great company does - learns from mistakes and makes them better next time. Hw else are you spouse make your product better?"

BY LOOKING AT WHAT THE FUCK IS ALREADY OUT THERE BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO START A COMPANY! The improvements Alex is learning and making now are improvements that snowboarding learned about decades ago! Twin-tip boards?! Are you fucking kidding me?!

Here fool, let me show you some real women's snowboards...

    Never Summer Infinity - http://neversummer.com/snow/infinity.html
    GNU B-Street - http://www.gnu.com/snowboards/bStreet.html
    K2 Duchess - http://www.k2snowboarding.com/product/duchess
    K2 Mix - http://www.k2snowboarding.com/product/mix

...and I could keep going all day. Read those descriptions, check out the board specs, open your fucking eyes! You are blind!

"Then you can also go the other way an say give me a board to try..just to get a free board."

Congratulations! I was making bets with myself to see who would be the predictable moron to comment about my wanting a free board. Well what if I send the piece of shit back after I try it? I already have five or six boards so why would I want to keep some shoddy chick's model around; there, are you happy now? I'm not the one who made the suggestion to try a Bitchboards anyway... your bitches were.

"If your a male - hw can you possibly comment on what is good about the board and wht is not??? unless your secretly wanting to be a female. You dont knw whts good for chicks! We hve totally different perspectives to males..Its sooo a fact. Get over it."

Gosh, well I’m sorry to inform you that even today most women’s models are tested by both men and women. Anyway, I'm not trying to tell you what should be in a women's specific ride... but if there really is anything different in a Bitchboard built specifically for a female rider, I would be able to tell.

You seem to have missed the entire point of this article, which is that Bitchboards just doesn't seem like the company it claims and all snowboarders should be aware of companies like that. I don't think their boards are anything special compared to the true women's snowboard models.

Honestly, YOU have a different perspective to REAL female snowboarders... and I AM over it.

"Keep on hating people - Someones gotta do it, and you will find they are the least successful people in life."

I am definitely one of the least successful people in life.

According the rules of acceptable behavior for our society I am a complete failure... I don't have a small fortune in my bank account, I don't have five Mercedes-Benz, I don't own a vacation home in Aspen and truthfully I don't even really have a "residence".

I am a snowboarder. I work meaningless jobs all summer long and part-time in the winter just to spend every penny I earn trying to top the season before. I'm constantly toeing the line of "poverty", all so that I can buy a season pass, some GOOD shred gear and ride as much as humanly possible.

So to you I probably am a failure, but to me I'm one of the most successful motherfuckers I know.

I care about snowboarding and I care about it's future. When I see a bullshit company step into the mix and steal money/customers from companies I depend upon by lying about their products, you better fucking believe that I'm going to start "hating", and until the day Bitchboards either steps up and starts making a truly progressive product or shuts its doors forever I will continue hammering away at them.

    Choke on that bitches.

  47. Did Alex really put the link to this blog on her Facebook? That screams "Professional" to me. She can't handle a few critics? That says something. She has to personally attack her critics.

I dont care what industry you work in, there are always going to be critics. If she wants to be true competitor in this market she has to step up. Talk to experienced female riders and learn what the female rider really wants.

Last thing. "Bitch?" Really? To me that just implies that you have no respect for your company or your products. Once again thats just not professional. I understand the whole girl power thing, but who honestly wants "Bitch" labeled on their board?

    Just my 0.02

  48. Hahahah this just made my day. I'm sort of on the fence with this topic though. Oh, and I'm a chick. I was actually researching Bitchboards to see what the majority thought about them before I tested one out, when I stumbled upon this and about a thousand other articles. Then I decided to check out the website, which unlike most established snowboard companies, doesn't give all the science behind the boards, which leads me to believe they are all about the glitz and glam smacked onto a board, not how it's physically made.

Sorry I can't pick a side very strongly.

  49. Ahh I just found this interview on the Shred Betties site interviewing Alex!

    http://www.shredbetties.com/riders/story/alex_masterson

"Do you plan on expanding to have different models of boards to suit different skill levels and riding styles?"

Alex- "Maybe in the future, all things are possible. Right now we are focusing on bringing this immediate need to the girls who are beginner and intermediate riders. There are great brands out there that are dedicated to technology and can really deliver a quality product to advanced riders who care only about performance."

Hahah, she pretty much just admitted her brand is not worrying the most about performance...isn't worrying about performance the point of getting a good board...?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ok I didn't read all the comments on this thread I'll admit. But I have visited the site and being a female rider that has tested a variety of boards the thing that bothered me the most was these boards are marketed (in my opinion) to girls who want pretty boards/graphics. Also, whats up with Alex plastering her face all over the site. I feel like she's trying to sell the whole "if you buy these boards you'll be as beautiful as I am."

I'm also not against marketing to a specific segment but there are plenty of boards that have been through rigorous research and development testing to cater to the female consumer. This isn't something new and somehow I don't really believe this company is making significant strides to technically produce the best snowboard for women. Like I said, it seems to be more of a "hey look this snowboard is pretty" type of thing.

    ReplyDelete
  51. What's up with all the haters? It's like everything else, everyone has choices. People like some brands better than others. At least we all have these choices. Quit doggin' the brands you don't like or use. Life's too freakin short!

    ReplyDelete
  52. LOL I got quite the kick out of reading the article and all the comments. Personally, I think Bitchboards is nothing but a sack of shit. I'll support any company that tries to progress women's snowboarding, but this company CLEARLY has no interest in progression. Seriously? Twin-tip? Is that ALL you got? Maybe in 10 years this comany will be where the majority of other female specific companies are now. Poor Alex... I feel sorry for her. She gets an 'A' for effort, but a 'F' for fucking FAILING in the snowboard inustry.

Girls, go get yourself a REAL board with REAL technology.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Ok, I'm starting a female board company. I've got diamante kick pads, leather credit card holders, bindings with calorie counters, this season I'm also adding gloves with built in mirrors, so I can check that I'm still looking hot!

The board? Oh, that's a cut down railways sleeper that I've shaved, but it comes in Gucci, Dior and D&G topsheets, on the bottom it says "I'm a chick who just fell on her ass, help me up you rude bastard! (unless you're poor, then ride on pleb!)"

Seriously, why take an inferior product just because someone says it's "For women"
    HOW is it for women?
Does it take advantage of the lighter female frame to provide more pop, or have less camber as less shock need be absorbed?
Does it have a wider base to allow for the off centre balance profile of the female form when in a crouched position?
Does it do anything that a lump of shaved wood does not do?

If I got a solid elephant turd, shaved it and painted it black with "Coco Chanel" written on it, some label whore would buy it. She would then fall on her arse all winter long and leave snowboarding for good.
How does this help snowboarding at all?
This isn't about a woman running a company for women, that is commendable, and there needs to be more of it, but there will not be when a woman runs a company that EXPLOITS women.
Bitchboards is cheap crap with a nice coat of paint. Save the cash, get a decent cheap board and get a laminater to put on whatever topsheet you want.

To all the fangirls here, try another board on a demo day. Notice that it turns smoother, has less chatter and your shins aren't as sore as on the bitchboard?

No matter what pretty colour you paint it, a turd is still a turd.

  54. I love how all the initial comments raving about BitchBoards being great were posted in about a 15 minute window. It either suggests the same person posting, or that BB mobilised an army of bone head barbies to post about how great it is. When you consider the consistent time between posts it's clear that all those comments came from one place. I don't give a sheet about whether BB are keeping it "real" or not, but nothing worse than guerilla tactics. I call a spade a spade.

  55. Ok i purchased a pair of bitchboard bindings and a board. I like the board, but was not very impressed with the bindings. so i called to see if i can return them because of some yellow stains. They told me I couldn't due to the fact they were on sale. Never on there site, did say anything that no returns if they were on sale. So they told me I could exchange them, but I did not want to pay for shipping and handling. So now I had to take pictures of them to show proof that it was a defect, just so they can pay for shipping and handling. I don't know, I'm not very impressed. First of all they should have had on the website, that sale items could not be returned.

  56. Hi all,

Been interested in buyin and importing BB into one of the european markets...however after reading that and some other articles i begin to doubt if its gonna work here.
EU market is really fastidious as far as quality is concerned.
We were also thinkig of SABRINA as an alternative for BB - any opinion on that one?Its a japaneese brand...not many reviews on the web though..
